The Dalai Lama is a Buddhist leader of religious officials of the Gelug or "Yellow Hat" branch of Tibetan Buddhism.This is a Mahahyanic Buddhist sect with additional aspects of native Tibtan religions.

Yellow Hats, the newest of the schools of Tibetian Buddhism, was founded by Je Tsongkhapa. He was an admirer of the Kadampa teachings and promoted the Kadam School's emphasis on the Mahayana principle of compassion. The most influential figure is the Daiai Lama.

The Dalai Lama is the secular head of the Tibetan people and the Spiritual Leader of the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
